FAYWOOD HOT SPRINGS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What temperature does the natural mineral water come out of the earth?

About 137F.

What temperatures are the pools?

The temperatures in the different pools will vary. The Private Pools are kept between 104F and 107F according to the ambient air temperature and wind chill factor. The cooler the ambient air, the hotter the pools. The Private Hot Tubs are controlled by the user. Each hot tub has a hot and cold water faucet and can be adjusted between about 70F and 120F. There are three pools in the Clothing-Required bathing area. The Lower Clothing-Required pool is usually about 100F. The middle pools is usually about 103F-104F. The Upper Clothing-Required pool is usually between 107F and 110F. There are three soaking pools in the Clothing Optional bathing area. The Lower Clothing-Optional pool  is usually about 100F. The Middle Clothing-Optional pool is usually between 103F and 104F. The Upper Clothing-Optional pool is usually between 107F and 110F.

The medium hottest one is usually between 103F and 104F. And, there is a cool plunge, which is usually about 20 degrees cooler than the hottest one.

Would it be possible to get to your resort from the El Paso airport without renting a car?
Yes, visit the Las Cruces Shuttle at http://www.lascrucesshuttle.com and they will deliver you right to our front door.

How do you regulate the temperature of the water in the pools?

We adjust the amount of hot water that flows into each pool. The cooler the ambient air temperature (or the wind chill), the more hot water flows into the pools. In the summer, when the air temperature is hotter, we mix cold water (mineral water that has been stored in tanks and cooled) with the hot water so that we can maintain a good flow (to keep the pool water clean) and not over-heat the pools.

Do you use chemicals to treat the water?

No. We use what is called a flow-through system.  Enough fresh water enters the pools so that the water is exchanged every few hours, always keeping the water fresh. Several times a week, we empty and scrub the pools with household bleach. This bleach is rinsed off and the pools are re-filled with fresh water. In the Summer, when the days are long, we sometimes add a small amount of household bleach, in the middle of the night use, to kill the green algae that can grow on the sides of the pools. The algae is healthy and healthful but some people think the pools are dirty when they see algae.

How long can I stay in the water?

This is a very personal matter and is different with everyone. Your body will tell you when it is time to get out. If you should ever feel dizzy, sit at the edge of the pool until your head clears.

Can I soak in the mineral water if I am pregnant?

You should consult your physician. There are many different opinions on this.

How many soaking pools and hot tubs are there?

There are a total of fourteen. There are three private pools and two private hot tubs. There are three public pools in the Clothing-Required bathing area and three public pools in the Clothing-Optional bathing area, and three pools, in the camping area, that are reserved for our over-night guests.

What is the weather like different times of the year?

No matter what the weather, our mineral pools are always very    enjoyable. We keep the pools a little cooler in the summer and a litter hotter in the winter. There are shades over many of the pools during the summer. The shades are removed in the evening for star gazing. Remember we are at  an elevation of 5,000 ft. Silver City's motto is "Four Gentle Seasons."

We always think Autumn is the most ideal time of the year. The days are warm and sunny and the evenings are cool. Winter is also usually delightful. The days are usually warm and sunny. It cools down in the evening and often freezes at night. We usually have a light snow two or three times a year. It is beautiful but doesn't last long. We also usually have one or two cold snaps each winter when the night time temperature can reach as low as 15F. Spring is usually blustery. It is often windy and sometimes very windy. The wind can bring the wind-chill down and spring often seems like the coldest season of the year. Our Summers start out hot and dry. Around July our monsoon season begins. The monsoons bring rains from Mexico. During the monsoons season it can be hot and sunny, cool and overcast, drizzling or raining so hard that one can hardly see.

Is it enjoyable to bathe in the mineral water in the summer time?

Yes. As surprising as it may seem to some, the hot mineral water has a great cooling effect and can be very enjoyable on a hot Summer day. Many of the pools are well shaded in the Summer.

Is there access for the Physically Challenged?

Yes. Most of the public pools are easily accessible as are one of the private pools and one of the private hot tubs.

Can I reserve a particular tent or RV site?

Yes and No.....We understand that many of our guests like particular sites. We try to reserve requested sites, but sometimes inconsiderate visitors ignore our reservation information and park in the reserved site anyway. Because the sites are far from the office it is sometimes hard to enforce the site reservations. We do our best but can not absolutely promise. Take a look at the "Map of Facilities" page. This will  give the location of all our overnight sites, which are numbered. You can reserve any particular site you like, as long as it is not already reserved by someone else. If you do not reserve a particular site you can pick a site from the sites that are available upon your arrival. RV sites 7, 8 & 9 are 50 amp., all others are 30 amp. All of the sites are very nice.

Where do I park my vehicle if I use a tent site?

There is parking conveniently located near each tent site.

Will my jewelry change colors or tarnish in the mineral water?

No.

Faywood Hot Springs is open every day, all year.

What are all those tanks on top of the hill?

These tanks are the beginning of a building that will sit atop the hot spring mound or tufa dome. The tanks serve the following purposes:

1.  They store water, providing approximately 35,000 gallons of water for general usage and fire protection.

2.  The storage tanks enable us to use greater quantities of water during times of peak demand and to store the water at times of less demand.

3.  The largest one is a distribution tank, providing water to our various facilities.

4.  Having the additional water storage will enable us to clean out the hot spring source while keeping all of our facilities open. The last time the spring source was cleaned out was in 1895.  Today the spring is full of approximately 8000 cubic feet of sand, debris and minerals, accumulated over the last 105 years.

5.  These tank also provide added water pressure to our entire water system.

6. Last, but not least, these tanks will provide the corner supports for the future spring house observatory.
